It was a fantastic review, though I’ve yet to see the movie. Even without seeing though, its no surprise to me that the kids who constantly have an adult doing things for them will be stressed when left to their own devices. Adults routinely underestimate the capability and understanding of children – even babies.

Its something I’ve had to learn from my own children’s Montessori teachers. To just give children a bit of direction, then give them space – they’ll figure it out. As parents we don’t always have to step in & fix things or provide entertainment.

I do have to comment on the question posed by the author though, of why do American women idealize natural births, and African women want hospital births? Its all about safety. Women want to birth where they feel most safe and supported – for themselves AND their babies, and we should all be able to do so, no matter where we live.

That question bugged me, because it didn’t seem quite fair, either. I don’t know many moms who idolize giving birth in a tent in a village without clean water, with little or no access to a hospital. That’s not what the homebirth movement is. And African hospitals may not be nearly as highly medicalized and intervention-hungry as American ones. It felt to me like they were throwing that in there as an offhand comment on how silly American mothers want, to idolize African moms when clearly THEY don’t want to give birth like that! All women have the right to give birth where they feel is safest, and that will vary depending on the individual, their situation, and their geographic location.
